‘C’est un beau lieu’, from the French ‘what a beautiful place’, was Mary Queen of Scots reaction to the grandeur
of the scene when she stayed in Beauly, (Byoo-lee) 10 miles west of Inverness, in the 16th century, and local
tradition credits the naming of the village to her. The village has a well-deserved reputation for its top-class
floral displays. During the summer the window boxes, hanging baskets and flower beds are a wonderful sight and
clearly show why Beauly was a worthy winner of the Large Village in Bloom competition for the whole of the UK.
