Saitama, 15-30 km north of central Tokyo and roughly at the centre of the Kanto Plain, was founded on May 1
st
2001 (and designated by government ordinance on April 1
st
2003) incorporating the former cities of Urawa,
Omiya, and Yono, and in 2005, Saitama absorbed the city of Iwatsuki. The western part of the city lies on the
lowland created by the Arakawa, Shiba and Ayase Rivers, with the rest of the area sitting on the Omiya Plateau.
The RSCDS Saitama Branch was also founded in April 2001.
